Hi tutor, congratulations on signing up for your first shifts with PLUS! As you prepare for the session, a couple of thoughts might be swirling in your mind:

"What are the softwares my students will use?”

"What level of math proficiency are my students at?"

"What kind of support will the classroom teachers offer?"

Don’t worry—we've got you covered!


1️⃣ Tech and Tools

  • Math Software: Get to know IXL, i-Ready, or MATHia for engaging math lessons.

  • Devices: You’ll assist students on a variety of devices including Chromebooks, PCs, or iPads.

  • In-Session Support: Classroom teachers will be there to help with classroom management, and you’ll be briefed on the students' math levels.

LMSA is a new school so students are still learning classroom norms and procedures. LMSA is an important early partner of the PLUS program so we want to support them as much as possible.

Wheatland Middle School is one of our newer school partners so students are still getting into the habit of logging into the tutoring program. Students are also on a 6 day rotation which means tutors might not see the same students for a few weeks.

The percentage of students achieving proficiency in math is 4% (which is lower than the Pennsylvania state average of 38%) for the 2020-21 school year.

Minority enrollment is 88% of the student body (majority Black)

Student laptops at Langley are older and in disrepair which makes it challenging for them to have consistent audio and video in Zoom.

According to state test scores, 23% of students are at least proficient in math.


Q.3. General demographics?

Minority enrollment is 53% of the student body (majority Black), which is higher than the Pennsylvania state average of 37% (majority Black).


Q.4. Important things to keep in mind?

Students at Moss Side regularly use iPads and IXL in their classrooms so they are well prepared to log into math software and use their devices.

97% of the students at Jackson Middle School come from minority communities (The majority of whom are Hispanic)

Stdents at Jackson Middle School speak multiple languages, with Spanish being spoken as the primary language in many households.

Class sizes are large at Glacier Point with the average number of students in each tutoring session between 30 and 35 students. Tutor to student ratios are therefore higher at Glacier Point than at other schools.
