Tutor Responsibilities

Tutoring sessions are active engagements requiring punctuality and preparation. As a tutor with PLUS, your responsibilities encompass the following:

⏯️ Pre-Session

  • Be prepared to arrive on time to your session.

  • Be in a quiet, stable location with stable internet connectivity.

  • Let a tutor supervisor know if you are having any tech issues before your shift!

If you need to miss a shift you are registered for, you must formally give notice at least 12 hours before your shift's start time. To formally give notice, you must:

  1. Complete the shift swaps form.

  2. Post in the #shift-swaps channel to ask for coverage (or in #lead-tutors if you are a lead tutor).

If you miss a shift or arrive late without providing notice as stated above, you will receive an unexcused absence warning. If you receive three or more unexcused absence warnings in a semester, your tutoring position will be terminated.

We recognize that unexpected emergencies can arise, and when they do, we will excuse an absence. In the event of an emergency, contact your tutor supervisor as soon as you safely can.

▶️ During the Session

  • Keep your camera on with the PLUS zoom background visible.

  • Record sessions for quality assurance.

    • For sessions on Zoom, start your recording at the beginning of the session. The recording will save to your device. You will upload it after the session.

    • For sessions on Pencil, the recording will save to the cloud.

  • Visit each of your assigned students in their breakout rooms, ensuring everyone receives attention.

  • Encourage students to share their screens and participate actively.

  • Provide proactive assistance to students as they work in their school's math software (IXL, MATHia, or iReady).

    • For sessions at Mohawk and Huntington East, please sign into the MATHia Learning Insights Dashboard (LID). If you do not have access to LID, please reach out to Alex Houk on Slack.

  • Implement effective strategies from the PLUS Tutoring Lessons.

⏭️ Post-Session

  • Remain on the call to debrief with the lead tutor.

  • Share insights and successes in a group discussion after the session ends.

    • If any urgent issues (e.g., inappropriate student conduct) occurred during the session, please message your tutor supervisor immediately. We can reach out to the school's teachers and administration as needed.

  • Complete the session's reflection form in the PLUS app.

  • For Zoom sessions, upload your recording via the reflection form.

🔁 Continuous Engagement

  • Stay engaged on Slack! We use Slack for communicating last-minute shift changes, training requirements, and one-off opportunities.

  • Complete all required lessons or other assigned trainings in the PLUS app.

  • Participate in tutor surveys and provide feedback for ongoing PLUS research.
